Old Man, Riding

Dapper capped old man

Bikes proud, strong, flashing striped socks

Early morning ride

This haiku describes a real event. This morning, while speeding to a Pilates class at 9:00 a.m., I passed an old man riding a bicycle with sedate, elegant intensity, in beautiful wool trousers carefully fastened with pants clips, a cap, and striped socks.

At that early hour, there weren’t many cars out yet on our popular main street, but he rode tall and strong with the traffic, early enough to beat the heat and crushing waves of bad drivers.

What I loved the best were the striped socks, pulled up high and confident of their righteous place in the world.
